Martial Arts After Forty is the first book ever to explore the needs and advantages of the over-forty martial artist. It takes an in-depth look at the realities of training in mid-life including: • What type of exercises are beneficial and which ones are dangerous? • What are the effects of aging and what impact do they have on training? • How can baby boomers keep up in a class of Gen-Xers? • What types of injuries are common after forty and how can you prevent them? In addition to providing a wealth of fitness and training information, author Sang H. Kim addresses the fact that many older martial artists are looking for something more meaningful than just a good workout. His positive and knowledgeable approach to taking up or continuing martial arts training after 40 is inspiring, reassuring and informative. This book should be read by every adult martial artist regardless of age. More Books by Sang H. Reviewer: Wendy Roob from WI Being a "40+" martial artist, I have been finding myself on the "mend" from several tae kwon do related injuries. I was losing confidence and motivation through the realization that I was having a difficult time keeping up with my classmates, most of whom are younger by 10-20 years. Through reading Martial Arts After 40, I was able to learn new exercises that my body could handle. Not only were the exercises described, but Dr. Kim also includes the fitness and martial arts benefits specific to each exercise. The "Thinking Points" at the end of each chapter were extremely enlightening, while promoting a positive mind set that the older martial artist should in no way let the "age" determine your motivation for success. And don't skip the "Mastery Points" at the end of the book- they help to reinforce the mind-body-spirit connection to martial arts that seems to be too quickly forgotten in our rush to have tae kwon do as a "sport" instead of it being recognized as a lifestyle!
Reviewer: Senguttuvan TD from New Delhi It is a well thought off Book. It is definitely useful for professionals who have not taken care of their health for around forty years and want to stat at this age. Sections of Fitness at desk fitness on the go, fitness at home out door fitness help one to achieve moderate fitness with minimum input. As professionals we are not going to enter in to a sparing match. Yes it is better to give our body to heal thyself. Exercises are arranged in a systematic manner so that one can design his or her own program. I have been trying the simple exercise given in this book for a month and I have lost around seven pounds and I am able to touch my toe with out bending the knees. This can be achieved by devoting 30 min for five days a week
Reviewer: N/A I am 51 now and a 2nd degree and I still find this book useful as when it was given to me when I was in my 40's. Good insights into how to continue martial arts as our bodies slow down and our minds mature.Â
Reviewer: Lillian Fabian from N/A The word "Do", a way of life, is connected to many different forms of martial arts and being a little older is in no way an indication that you should slow down. This book is excellent and very thorough. Thanks a lot!
Reviewer: Karl Van Zandt from Salem OR This book should be a best seller. I apprecaite the manner in which this book is written. I am a scientist, and can relate to the thoroughness to which this text book has been written. Thank you and god bless you for writting down in common language your gift of understanding the martial arts picture.
