Ask the Author: Sang H. Kim, author of Combat Strategy

Question: Dear Mr. Kim, I do not have a sparring partner. Do you think I should enroll in a school to get some type of practice in. If so , what type of school or style should I look for that can help with my Junsado? Kenny

Answer from Sang H. Kim:

Dear Kenny,

Sparring is a good way to enhance your fighting ability. It includes your iniatative action and counter action against whatever your opponent (partner) does. You can perceive the offensive intention of your opponent quicker and more precisely as you progress.

Developing mobility and adapting in constantly changing situation is the core of Junsado training. Therefore, any traditional martial arts or modified modern art classes like Karate, Taekwondo, Jujitsu, Kickboxing, Mixed Martial Arts are all good for training for your sparring. Every school has different rules and methods. Check it out before jumping in. The bottom line is not in what and where you learn, but how you interpret what you see and feel and take action to solve the situation. Whoever can help you get you on the way, go for it!

Best wishes,

Sang H. Kim
