Ask the Author: Sang H. Kim, author of Ultimate Fitness Through Martial Arts

Question: What is your opinion of weight training for the martial arts that I train in: iaido, kobudo jo, and wado ryu karate; also, do you have any specific diet recommendations as far as foods that are useful for a body practicing martial arts? C. S. Ramsey

Answer from Sang H. Kim:

Dear C.S.,

Weight training is excellent for strength development to supplement your martial arts training. However, it is important to stick to weight training as opposed to weight lifting. Proper weight training, high reps with moderate weight, will allow you to maintain flexibility while building strength. You should also work to balance the development of opposing muscle groups to maintain speed in your techniques. As long as you keep these tips in mind, weight training can be a great asset for martial arts.

With regard to diet, I have asked Turtle Press to post a new article on nutrition excerpted from Ultimate Fitness through Martial Arts. I hope you find it helpful in planning your training diet.

Sincerely,

Sang H. Kim
