Ask the Author: Sang H. Kim, author of Teaching Martial Arts

Question: Hello Sir, I have been training and teaching in Tae Kwon Do Chung Do Kwan going on now ten years. Thanks to turtlepress I have had the honor of learning and being enlightened by your passion for Tae Kwon Do. You have truly inspired me. My question is in regards to your teaching. I have heard you are retired from this part of your life. Is this true or do you still teach select students or offer seminars. If the case is true and you no longer teach then is there a student of yours that now teachs your system of Tae Kwon Do. Videos, DVD"s and Books only offer so much it would be a true honor to train face to face. Thank you very much for your time sir! Christopher Adams

Answer from Sang H. Kim:

Dear Christopher,

Thanks for your sincere interest in learning about teaching martial arts. If you have taught for over 10 years, you know something about teaching and are a successful teacher. This is a great contribution to the community. Regarding your question, unfortunately I no longer actively teach due to my commitments to writing and international projects that I have been asked to take on. I have been requested many times from many wonderful instructors like you about my seminars. I truly enjoy giving seminars and meeting students and teachers and parents. I miss all of them! So my decision was not an easy one.

However, teaching, I believe, is what you teach yourself every moment about facing problems, looking at them seriously, and taking action on your solutions. Students who come to martial arts schools usually come to learning problem solving skills, at least in part. Self-defense, fighting techniques, discipline, self -confidence are some of the things that they are often struggling with. What I can teach instructors is mostly how to find themselves so that they can help others (students) find themselves. Ultimately, every one of us is responsible for each moment we face in life, either good or bad. Therefore, your quest itself to have me at your Dojang tells me that you are a person searching for the path for your students.

Books and DVDs will inspire you. Between the lines and what I didn't explain, there are things you can fill in. In ten more years, you will fill the empty spaces with your own thoughts and notes far beyond what I thought of when I was writing or producing them.

So, I wish you a good luck on your path.

Sincerely,

Sang H. Kim
