Ask the Author: Dr. Art Brisacher, author of Martial Arts Training Diary for Kids

Question: Sometimes I feel like I am stuck and I don't make any progress. This is very discouraging and I feel like I will never learn some techniques that other people learn really easily. How can I make faster progress? Blake Gibson, Rockport, ME

Answer from Dr. Art Brisacher:

At one time or another, everyone involved in a martial art has asked themselves this question, and I believe for each individual there is a different correct answer. Finding your own correct answer is the basic challenge of any martial art. Here are a few tips to help you in you search to be the best you can be:

1. Try to worry less about how you compare to others and instead try to redirect your energy into developing a more scientific approach to your own training.

2. Ask higher belts for training tips and coaching points. Remember to keep notes on what works and what doesn't.

3. Making progress becomes an emotional issue for some of us. Your day to day feelings are not very accurate markers to determine if progress is being made. Keep progress notes or charts to determine your real situation.

4. When learning new techniques, some will come easily, some will be difficult to learn, and some you will never get or feel comfortable with. This is true for everyone, and this is the way you will develop your own particular style.
