Question: How can you recover from a serious training injury and what is the best way to prevent getting reinjured? Jason Phelps, Sandy, UT

Answer from Sang H. Kim:

Dear Jason,

The most important thing you can do is listen to your doctor and follow his or her advice very carefully. Do not return to training before your doctor gives you permission, even if you feel okay. But don't get discouraged. Just because you cannot train does mean you have to give up martial arts. Perhaps, your instructor will allow you to sit in on classes.

You can also keep up your studies by reading about the history and philosophy of your art, meditating, stretching (if you doctor approves) and visualization. When you doctor allows you to return to practice, focus on strengthening your injured area with a gradual rehabilitation program. Do not try to resume practicing at your previous level - this is the number one reason for reinjury. Take your training one step at a time and listen to your body. If you feel pain where you were injured, you are doing too much and risk reinjury. Be patient.
