Ask the Author: Sang H. Kim, instructor of Aerokicks DVD

Question: I was wondering if there was any books or videos that I could get to get more practice and training in Kyuk'pa (breaking techniques). Or maybe some tips. I am a 19 yrs old Cho-dan (first degree) black belt (Kukkiwon). I train in TKD, JUDO, and some Aikido & Jujitsu. David Tran

Answer from Sang H. Kim:

Dear David,

Kyukpa is an exciting part of taekwondo practice. There are many parts of your body you can use to do it. First, your hand-fist, knife, ridge knife, knuckle, finger tip or tips, back fist and palm. Second, elbow and forearm, Third, head (I don't recommend it unless you are under supervision of a qualified instructor), Lastly, kicking-front, roundhouse, side, axe, back, turn, jump kicks. Combination techniques of hands and feet can also be used.

Practicing on a sand bag or heavy bag, then on a harder object is helpful. Don't forget to gradually build up the conditioning so that you don't fracture your bone.

If you break a board, the board holder (or holders) should wear goggles for safety. That's a start David. If you have an interest in watching some great breaking techniques, get the Aerokicks DVD or the Taekwondo Hanmadang DVD.

Best wishes!

Sincerely, Sang H. Kim
