A Los Angeles Bouncer's Guide to Practical Fighting

The odds are, if you're attacked on the street you will have to defend yourself against a bigger, stronger assailant. When this happens, strength alone will not be enough to stop your attacker. The Science of Takedowns, Throws and Grappling for Self-defense addresses the concepts and, more importantly, the mindset required to survive an encounter with a larger attacker.

Martina Sprague, author of the top selling book Fighting Science, does more than show you what type of throws, takedowns, locks and presses work on the street. Learn why some techniques are more likely to get you into trouble than out of it, how to apply concepts like timing and positioning to make your techniques even more effective, how to defend against common attacks with a weapon and what you can do to use that weapon in your favor, which mistakes are the most common and how you can prevent them from weakening your defense, and much more. With over 300 photos, you won't find a more detailed, scientific look at takedowns, throws and grappling techniques specifically for self-defense.

solidly written and user friendly 5

Reviewer: Midwest Book Review from N/A
The Science Of Takedowns, Throws & Grappling For Self-Defense by kickboxing, freestyle, and Kenpo karate black belt expert Martina Sprague is a solidly written, "user friendly", self-defense guide filled from cover to cover with careful instructions, black-and-white photographs, safety tips, and straightforward "how-to" information on defending for oneself when attacked or assaulted in close quarters. Sample scenarios, a wide range of holds and takedowns, defenses and general safety tips, and a great deal more are packed into the pages of this easy-to-understand and potentially lifesaving resource. Also very highly recommended is Martina Sprague's early work: Fighting Science: The Laws Of Physics For Martial Artists (1880336723, $18.95).

one of the better books on self-defense 5

Reviewer: Fearless Reviews from N/A
I’ve read many books on self-defense, and I can easily say that this is one of the better ones. Most books in this field dazzle readers with moves that aren’t easily replicated in real-world situations, but seem like they’d be spectacular if you could pull them off. Sprague’s book makes no bones about it when it says you’ll be scared, you’ll probably screw up, and you need to have a wide variety of commonplace moves at your disposal in order to survive an encounter. Excellent advice. This easy-to-understand book is richly written and features over 300 photos to help guide the reader. It also tells you the best ways to practice these moves and includes a few sections on how to deal with weapons. More importantly, it also tells you when you should run, a bit of advice most books in this genre forget to mention. The Science of Takedowns ... is written for everyone, but only really meant for those who are interested in learning how to defend oneself. And for those who think it’s as easy as Jackie Chan makes it look, you’re in for a big surprise.
