The Self-Defense Encyclopedia is literally crammed with information. The picture quality is razor sharp, it has flawless sound, and it’s so easy to navigate from feature to feature (and there are a lot of features). Just bring up the menu, choose your topic and there it is. No winding forward and backwards trying to find what you want to view. With DVD, it only takes a second. Kim has done a complete job presenting valuable material for people interested in street defense. There are simple techniques for the beginner and techniques for the advanced, too. One particularly interesting feature is one called, “Scenario Training,” in which there are several situations where females are attacked by males. Most of them end up in a brawl on the ground, and the viewer is able to see what the defenders do right and what they do wrong. Afterwards, Kim talks with them about the scenario and what they learned from it. Self-Defense Encyclopedia is a good title, as the disc contains a full range of self-defense techniques, concepts and principles. There is enough here that you can pick up valuable information every time you view it.
I have used this DVD to augment a variety of training seminars I teach including a recent Womens Self Defense course I presented in my community. As an intructor, it is extremely important to realize your success in transferring knowledge to students is to teach through various learning processes such as presentation/lecture (audio process), hands-on (experiential based/ Kinesthetic Process), and training aids such as the DVD's (Visual Process) . It is also important to offer new and innovative material to the students so the learning process continues out of the classroom/dojo. As instructors, we know one of the biggest challenges to help our students achieve success is going to be based on how much training they do when you are not around. Your training DVD's are much better than handouts and allows the classroom to continue after the lessons are over. Keep up the good work.
Having already experienced several of Turtlepress' and very specifically, Mr. Sang H. Kim's work through the Junsado, Korean Martial History, and of course his renowned Tae Kwon Do books/CDs/videos/DVDs, I was very excited to see the DVD this review is about on the Turtlepress website. After purchasing and viewing the DVD- "Self Defense Encyclopedia" I realized that I had just seen a glimpse into what decades worth of experience looked like compressed onto a Digital Video Disc format. This DVD is a PERFECT companiion to Mr. Kim's Book Combat Strategy, and will help any martial artist who has ever seen any of his other Self-Defense videos/DVDs. This DVD will make sense to anyone, regardless of Martial Experience, and is probably a great tool for those who have NOT taken a martial Art to see what real martial training can do, as it is done in an incredibly easy to understand and realistic format. If you study any Martial Style; from a Self-Defense art like Hapkido, too! If you want to know how to use your trained skills to help you survive a real encounter on the street, without having to actually be in one, this is the DVD for you. All in all, another great product from Turtle Press, and another key addition to my martial arts library. Thanks a lot!
Probably the most important DVD ever produced.
