A Part of the Ribbon: A Time Travel Adventure through the History of Korea A Part of the Ribbon is an action adventure story that takes the reader on an exciting journey through Korean martial arts history. Told through the eyes of six year old Charlotte and her thirteen year old brother, Jeffrey, it provides a first hand look at the evolution of Korean culture, language and customs. Over the course of their travels, they join Hwarangdo warriors in battle, learn Korean calligraphy, battle the invading Japanese army in Turtle Boats, escape from pirates, and talk with Korean people at many points in the country's developing history. At each step along their journey, their taekwondo instructor answers their questions and describes the historical events unfolding around them. A Part of the Ribbon is illustrated with historically accurate black and white line drawings to help the reader see what Charlotte and Jeffrey are experiencing. Key words in Korean are italicized in the text and defined in the glossary. An extensive bibliography is provided for reference and further reading. An adventure story written for readers ages 9 and up, this book should be required reading for every taekwondo student regardless of age. An excellent reference for instructors. From the Authors, Ruth Hunter and Debra Fritsch: "A Part of the Ribbon is a highly entertaining time travel adventure which explores the cause and effect of history and culture in the development of taekwondo. Because it imparts information in such an interesting manner, readers often don't realize how much they've learned until they have completed the book." Reviewer: Laurie Emerson from MS My 9 year old son wanted to start Taekwondo as his dad has been an instructor for 10 years. We sat down with him and explained the philosophy of the time honored martial art and how it does not promote violence but instead defense when needed. To our dismay, too many misconceptions clouded his perception and he saw it as more of a karate. We searched for weeks to find just the right book which would explain in terms just exactly Taekwondo really is. Then we found A Part of the Ribbon and as a family read it from beginning to end. When finished, not only my son, but also his dad and I had a new respect for the martial art. This book is rich in history and each character is someone you get to know and care about. This book is so well written and at the end you feel a sense of what being a part of a long honored art feels like. Excellent book for children and adults.
Reviewer: Korean Quarterly from MN A Part of the Ribbon is principally a retelling of history in a way that brings to life many wonderful facts that usually lie buried in dry textbooks. The authors, Hunter and Fritsch, succeed in making these facts interesting to young people. Packed with cultural, social and historical information, A Part of the Ribbon brings history home to modern children. This novel would be an excellent start for children (and parents) interested in learning a little more about Korean history and culture
